The Physician Payments Sunshine Act (PPSA) or Sunshine Act is part of the Affordable Care Act and requires medical product manufacturers to collect and report information to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding payments to physicians and teaching hospitals. The manufacturers must collect and report these data on an annual basis and then CMS releases the information in a publicly searchable database. The goals of this law is to provide detail and a greater level of transparency around the financial relationship between physicians and medical product manufacturers, and uncover potential conflicts of interest.
